Using Web Photos Pro With LiveJournal
January 18, 2006

One of the questions I’ve been getting a lot of lately goes something like this:

Hey. I’m a livejournal user. I’m having a lot of trouble with the FTP server settings. It says invalid host whatever I try. What exactly is the URL and FTP codes for livejournal users?

First, I want to say thank you. Thank you for writing and asking the question, (instead of screaming aaarrrrgggghhhh and giving up).

Second, it’s not your problem, it’s ours, because the UI for the LiveJournal support is not at all obvious.*

Luckily, what you want to do is quite easy, and here’s how:

(Note: see the pictures below, with each step hilited)

How To Use Web Photos Pro With LiveJournal

1. Go to the Photo Galleries preferences panel.

2. Create a new photo gallery by clicking the New button.

3. Enter the following information into the fields:

  1. Gallery Title: LiveJournal (i.e. enter the word LiveJournal into the gallery title field)
  2. User Name: enter your LiveJournal user name here
  3. Password: enter your LiveJournal password here

4. Click the Test button.

You should get a message back that says “Successfully logged in to your LiveJournal account.” If you get any other message, it will tell you what went wrong, e.g. invalid user name, invalid password, invalid account, account suspended, etc.

(Note: if you get the message “No challenge returned", click “Test” again, until you either log in successfully, or get an error message as described above. The “no challenge returned” error usually indicates a timeout problem, because either your network, or the pics.livejournal.com site is slow.)

5. Click the Save button to save this LiveJournal photo gallery.

6. Now, to back to the List of Albums window. Select an album. Choose “LiveJournal” from the Photo Gallery: popup menu.

7. Click upload.

8. Voila, the album will be uploaded to your LiveJournal Scrapbook account.

If you find Web Photos Pro useful for uploading your LiveJournal Scrapbook photos, we’d love to hear about it (and if you don’t, we’d love to hear that too).

With kindest regards,
– Frank Leahy

* The reason for this is that LiveJournal support was added to Web Photos Pro as a test, a test to see how easy it would be to target another back-end platform (pretty easy it turned out). But instead of creating a separate preferences panel for LiveJournal users, we reused some of the FTP fields. Easy for us. Harder for you.

  2. Hi Sue,

    1) What kind of line are you on, dial-up or DSL?

    2) When you get that “no challenge” error message, do you get a first error message that says “error 103 unknown user"?

    3) What do you see when you go to “http://pics.livejournal.com/interface/simple” in a browser?

  4. The answer is…try again!

The pics.livejournal.com site can be slow at certain times of the day, this is why you’re seeing “No challenge returned". Please click the Test button until it either 1) logs you in successfully, or 2) gives you a message that says something like “invalid username” or “invalid password", i.e. something other than “No challenge returned".

If you still can’t log in, please let me know!

    Regards,

  6. I followed your directions and got socket error.
I think you need to explain more settings. I set url to pics.livejournal.com and ftp.livejournal.com
Perhaps you need what a screen should look like as an example instead of just the password and username you put in your example.

  9. I tried to download Web Photos Pro (I got a link from LiveJournal) for Windows XP and it said the site could not be found. I was given this link: http://www.webphotospro.com/articles/release-notes-web-photos-pro-12/, then clicked on “Download here” to get this URL: http://www.webphotospro.com/articles/web-photos-pro-12-released/
and then clicked on the Windows XP one and it gave me this:

    404: File Not Found

Sorry, But We Couldn’t Find The Page You Requested

Please return to our home page and try again.

Where can I download it from?

    Thanks!

  10. I followed all the instructions on this page successfully. It claims to have uploaded my pictures to my livejournal scrapbooks successfully, asks if I want to see them, I say yes, and then it says it can’t find them and asks if perhaps I didn’t upload them.

  11. Frank, I have yet to recive a response to my previouse inquiry. Further, your support forum is offline as is of no help. I need some form of answer/support in regards to what is going on.

when attempting to update iphoto, I follow these steps: “Refresh Step 1: Go to the iPhoto preferences panel and click the “Refresh My iPhoto Albums” button.”

Webphotopro will go through the proccess of updating, however it is failing to display/update my newly created iphoto albums.

I am using an 2006 ibook 14″ g4, OS x 10.4.7, iphoto 6.0.4 (305), and webphoto pro 1.2.1. Please, what is going on? how do I resolve? Please redact my name and e-mail address.

  12. nifty however when the photos are uploaded they do not retain their name. For example a photo is named accomplished.jpg on my computer but once uploaded it simply gets labeled photo 1. Not sure if its due to something on the program end or LJ but this filename loss makes the program way more work intensive if you have to go in & re-establish the names on every single photo.

The original photos were named & categorized in a folder in My Pictures (winXP). The folder was dragged into Web Photos to establish the album, ordering & names were retained at this level.

  13. I was able to upload albums the first time with WebPhotos Pro, but as I start to add new pictures it’s giving me an error code. The code is: 302 invalid auth. I have the latest version for livejournal. Any info is appreciated.
